Writing a Trades Resume
Skilled trades are experiencing a historic talent shortage, with an estimated 650,000 unfilled positions in the construction industry alone. For qualified tradespeople, this means opportunity, but a strong resume still makes the difference between landing a job at a premium employer with full benefits versus settling for less. Trades resumes differ from office jobs in one critical way: certifications and licenses are often non-negotiable requirements, not nice-to-haves. Place them prominently near the top of your resume.
List every relevant certification, license, and safety training with issuing bodies and dates: journeyman or master electrician license, EPA 608 certification, OSHA 10/30, confined space entry, NFPA 70E arc flash training, and any manufacturer-specific credentials (Carrier, Trane, Honeywell). If you hold a CDL or specialized equipment certifications (forklift, aerial lift, crane), include those as well. Hiring managers in the trades industry often filter resumes by certification first and experience second.
When describing your work history, focus on the scale and complexity of projects. Instead of "Installed electrical systems," write "Completed rough-in and finish electrical for a 120-unit multifamily residential complex, including 400A service panels and fire alarm integration, passing inspection on first attempt." Mention the types of facilities you have worked in (commercial, industrial, residential, institutional), the code standards you follow, and your safety record. A clean safety record with zero lost-time incidents is a powerful differentiator in trades hiring.
