Resume Guide

How to Write a Welder Resume

A Welder resume must lead with your AWS certifications, the welding processes you're qualified for, and your inspection pass rates. Fabrication shops, construction contractors, and manufacturing plants all use certifications and tested positions (3G, 6G) as primary screening criteria — a welder who can't specify their qualifications won't advance past the initial review. The strongest welder resumes also demonstrate the materials you've worked with, the environments you've welded in (structural, pressure, pipe, and confined space), and your unblemished safety record.

1. List Your Welding Certifications and Qualified Positions

AWS certifications and qualified weld positions are the primary technical screen for welding roles. Specify your processes: SMAW, GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), FCAW, or SAW. Then list the test positions you're qualified for: 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G (plate) or 1G, 2G, 5G, 6G (pipe). 6G pipe certification is a premium qualification that commands significantly higher pay and opens structural and pressure piping roles.

2. Specify Base Metals and Applications

Welding skills on carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and exotic alloys (Inconel, titanium) are not interchangeable. State which metals you work with and in what applications: structural steel fabrication, pressure vessel construction, pipe welding, or sheet metal. Material and application specificity tells employers exactly which projects you're qualified to work on.

3. Highlight Inspection Pass Rates and Safety Record

Quality and safety are the two metrics fabricators and contractors value most. State your NDT inspection pass rate (visual, X-ray, or ultrasonic), your rework rate, and your safety incident record. 'Maintained 100% X-ray acceptance rate over 200+ production welds' is a powerful credential that demonstrates both technical skill and consistent quality control.
