Writing a Finance Resume
Finance and accounting remain among the most credential-driven fields in the job market. Certifications like the CPA, CFA, and CMA are not merely nice-to-haves for many roles — they are gatekeeping requirements that appear at the top of job descriptions before experience or education are even mentioned. If you hold one of these designations, list it prominently after your name (e.g., "Jane Smith, CPA") and again in your credentials section with the issuing body and year obtained. Candidates actively pursuing licensure should note their exam progress (e.g., "CPA Candidate, 3/4 sections passed") to signal commitment. In a field where trust and technical credibility are paramount, certifications are the fastest way to establish both.
Quantifying financial impact is the single most important differentiator between a forgettable finance resume and one that generates interviews. Hiring managers in this field are numbers-focused by training, and they expect your bullet points to reflect that. Every achievement should answer: how much money was involved, by what percentage did you improve something, and over what time period? Instead of "Managed the annual budget process," write "Owned the annual budgeting cycle for 4 business units totaling $75M, delivering forecasts within 2% variance across three consecutive fiscal years." Highlight cost savings you identified, revenue forecasting accuracy, audit findings resolved, and efficiency gains from automation or process redesign. Specific dollar figures and percentages carry far more weight than narrative descriptions.
Compliance literacy and software proficiency round out a strong finance resume. Hiring managers expect familiarity with the applicable regulatory frameworks for the role — GAAP for corporate accounting, IFRS for multinational organizations, SOX for public companies, and Basel III or Dodd-Frank for financial services. Failing to mention these signals inexperience, even if you have been following them throughout your career. On the technology side, list your proficiency with financial systems in concrete terms: QuickBooks Online, SAP S/4HANA, Oracle Fusion, NetSuite, or Workday Financials. For FP&A roles, emphasize advanced Excel capabilities (VBA, dynamic arrays, Power Query) and any exposure to BI tools like Tableau or Power BI. Finance employers also increasingly value SQL skills for querying financial data warehouses, so include that if relevant.
