Writing a Legal Resume
Bar admissions and jurisdictional authority are the first things legal employers look for on an attorney resume. List every state and federal court where you are admitted to practice, including the year of admission and any specialty court certifications (e.g., U.S. Tax Court, patent bar). If you are pending admission in a new jurisdiction, note that as well. For paralegals and legal assistants, certifications from the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) or the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) serve a similar signaling function, demonstrating that you have met a recognized professional standard. Do not bury these credentials in the body of the resume — place them near the top where they will be seen immediately.
Practice area specialization and measurable case outcomes transform a generic legal resume into a compelling one. Rather than listing "litigation experience," specify: "Managed a docket of 60+ active matters across commercial litigation and employment law, from initial intake through trial preparation and settlement negotiations." For attorneys, quantify outcomes where confidentiality permits — percentage of matters resolved favorably, size of settlements or verdicts, number of trials or hearings conducted, and client retention rates. For paralegals, describe the volume of documents reviewed in e-discovery matters, the number of attorneys supported, and the complexity of filings managed. Billable hour performance is also relevant for associates and paralegals: if you consistently met or exceeded your firm's targets, state that directly.
Legal technology fluency has become a core competency rather than an optional differentiator. Employers expect proficiency with research platforms like Westlaw and LexisNexis, but increasingly also value experience with e-discovery tools (Relativity, Concordance), contract lifecycle management systems (Ironclad, DocuSign CLM), and practice management software (Clio, MyCase, iManage). For in-house counsel roles, familiarity with legal operations metrics and tools that drive efficiency across the legal function — such as matter management platforms and spend analytics dashboards — is a genuine advantage. Finally, if you have writing samples, published articles, or law review notes that demonstrate your analytical and drafting capabilities, reference them on the resume and make them available for review. Clear, precise legal writing is a skill that distinguishes candidates at every level.
